BBC Unit Photography in North Wales

In the autumn of 2025 we were brought in by the BBC to undertake Unit Photography on a 15 week production that was being filmed here in North Wales. Initially our brief was to shoot on some rock climbing scenes early in the production but this was later extended to include general scenes away from the mountains.

Unit Photography presents a unique set of challenges. The photographer needs to work to the client brief but is shooting whilst the filming is taking place. We therefore have no direction over the actors. We also have to stay out of the way of the camera operators and sound engineers as they are shooting the scene. On top of that we have to be silent, utilising mirrorless cameras with electronic shutters, to avoid spoiling the audio in the scene.

This was challenging but rewarding work and nicely summed up by this email we received after delivering the shots “Rob, you smashed it, some fantastic shots in here. Thanks so much. So happy.” Debi Berry – BBC Studios Creative
