Peak District 24th June 2016

I have spent the end of this week in the Peak District working on a video production project that should be out by the end of the summer. I have been watching the weather for a couple of weeks now and managed to grab the light that I was looking for hot off the plane from Sardinia. Many thanks to Mark & Terry for their help in putting the scene together.

Aerial Destination Photography – Sardinia 23rd June 2016

I have been working in Sardinia this week on an aerial destination photography shoot for Thomson Holidays, gathering stills and video for their 2017 marketing campaign for the Island. The travel arrangements were all sorted by the client and I ended up flying from Manchester to Stuttgart and then onto Sardinia which presented two opportunities for airlines to lose my baggage – my worst nightmare when working on a tight shoot overseas – but thankfully everything arrived safely and in…

Flying Scotsman Aerial Filming 15th June 2016

The Flying Scotsman visited North Wales this afternoon, making a journey from Chester to Holyhead. It seemed too good an opportunity to miss and so armed with the DJI Inspire Pro and the Panasonic GH4 I decided to capture it on film. Here is the brief bit of footage I managed as it steamed past. 360 Aerial Photos 14th June 2016

360 Aerial Photos – Bangor This weekend Facebook gave a great new feature for us photographers, for the first time it allows us to upload 360 degree photographs. When viewed on a mobile device they are interactive, on a desktop you can get a similar experience by swiping your mouse to view where you want to in the image. 360 aerial photos are achieved using a drone, some clever stitching software, Photoshop and then uploading for the world to enjoy….

DJI Inspire Travel Mode 12th June 2016

DJI Inspire Travel Mode A quick tip to solve the problem of the DJI Inspire not going into travel mode: The DJI Inspire Travel Mode is designed to allow the DJI Inspire to fold down flat and fit into it’s travel case during transit. It’s a nifty little feature and feels pretty cool the first couple of times that you do it. Every now and again it seems to have a glitch. Have you ever tried to get the Inspire…

The best Time-Lapse you have ever seen? 11th June 2016

Keith Loutit has just raised the bar for time-lapse films. I was told last week that time-lapse is so 2012 now – but watch this and prepare to be impressed. Here is what Keith had to say: “When we pass by landscapes they appear fixed in time, but they change around us constantly. The idea behind this film is to reveal this change by returning to the same camera positions over the years.” Enjoy the film below: The Lion City…

Filming in Northern Ireland 1st June 2016

I have spent this week filming in Northern Ireland. I have been working with Posing Productions on the Brit Rock 2016 film that they are putting together – a celebration of rock climbing in the UK and following on from the success of previous Brit Rock hits. It’s been great to visit some new places including Fairhead, one of the most impressive rock climbing venues I have seen in the UK. I was filming with the DJI Inspire Pro and…

Filming on the Isle of Skye 30th May 2016

We were working up on the Isle of Skye again last week, our third visit to the “Misty Isle” this year. We have various projects on the go and last week included doing some filming for the Munro Piper, getting some coastal footage for a client and putting together a short film of the Inaccessible Pinnacle, the only Munro (Scottish mountain over 3000ft) to require climbing skills to reach its summit. Here are a couple of snaps from the week:

Olympus 25mm f1.8 Lens on DJI Inspire Pro 20th May 2016

Olympus 25mm f1.8 Lens on DJI Inspire Pro One of the big advantages of the DJI Inspire Pro is the ability to change your lens. I recently purchased the Olympus 25mm f1.8 Lens and have been playing with it on our DJI Inspire Pro. I am working on a rock climbing film project at the moment and the big advantage of the 25mm lens is that I can get much closer into the action without having to fly perilously close to the…

Aerial Photography & Filming – North Wales Coast 8th May 2016

Aerial Photography & Filming – North Wales Coast I have been out with the Inspire Pro over the last couple of days doing some aerial photography and filming on the North Wales Coast. When you live somewhere it’s really easy to take it for granted so I have been making a special effort to appreciate the beauty of home! I am working on half a dozen different projects at the moment and most of them are local, here in Snowdonia…

Transporting a drone for mountain filming 21st April 2016

Transporting a drone for mountain filming I got this email the other day and so thought I would post an article here in reply: “Hi Rob, – First of all: awesome images!!! – I would love to do something similar for my ski alpinism trips (e.g., http://www.skitour.fr/sorties/lagginhorn,51173.html or http://www.skitour.fr/sorties/taschhorn,50829.html) – I was wondering, how do you transport your drone, you have a Phantom, right? it seems to be pretty bulky, requiring a 2nd backpack? – I have both an issue…

Filming on Anglesey 20th April 2016

I have been filming on the amazing cliffs of Gogarth on Anglesey today for a climbing film that I am working on. Here is a still from the day – amazing weather for it!

Filming on Dartmoor 20th April 2016

I have been down in Devon for the last couple of days and have been doing some filming work for Alistair Lee at Posing Productions. Alistair is a legend in climbing film production and is probably one of the most successful adventure film makers in the UK so it is exciting to be working with him. We had some stunning weather on Dartmoor, somewhere that I have not spent much time before but somewhere I will definitely go back to…

Aerial Filming Isle of Skye & Highland 7th March 2016

Aerial Filming Isle of Skye & Highland I have been doing some aerial filming on the Isle of Skye and in the Highlands this weekend. I was workings part of a Chinese crew who were making a video commercial for a car manufacturer in China. The shoot involved getting lots of shots of the car and the beautiful wild scenery of the Isle of Skye and the Scottish Highlands. The weather was quite challenging for me, we had some very…

Aerial Photography Deeside 3rd March 2016

Aerial Photography Deeside I have been in Deeside this morning doing an aerial photography job for a company that has recently changed its branding and wanted some aerial photographs of its Deeside factory. Aerial photography using drones or UAV’s in industrial areas such as trading estates can be tricky and take a bit of pre-planning to ensure that they are done safely and legally. We needed to do the usual pre-flight survey and risk assessments, on-site surveys and take control…
